At the recent San Antonio Medical Center on Sunday, it was revealed that anabolic and other erectile dysfunction medications including Viagra and Cialis were being sold over the counter at a price of $6.50, and that the cost of each of these drugs was set to vary from $4.50 to $10,000.
“We were shocked by the price,” said Dr. David Shabsigh, a urologist at San Antonio Medical Center in Houston.
“We were shocked to learn that these medications were being sold at a price of $6.50,” he added.
For many men, this is a normal part of life and can be very frustrating, said Dr. Shabsigh, who has been practicing urology for nearly 10 years.
“For the majority of men, these medications have been around the clock for the last 10 years,” he said. “They cost $10,000 to $20,000 for each of these medications.”
Viagra is the only ED drug that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in men, but it’s also one of the most popular medications in the United States.
Currently, the FDA doesn’t have a drug specifically for treating erectile dysfunction, but Shabsigh was able to find out more about this topic.
“The cost of this drug, the cost of this drug, is going to be a huge problem,” he said.
Viagra’s patent ended in 2014, and it’s been used by thousands of men in the United States to treat their erectile dysfunction.
While it’s true that erectile dysfunction is a common condition, the cost of erectile dysfunction medication is only the tip of the iceberg, according to Shabsigh.
“I’m not saying the cost of these medications will be a problem in the long term,” he said.
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that men who take Viagra were less likely to have erectile dysfunction than men who use a placebo.
“In fact, the cost of Viagra, Viagra’s active ingredient, in general, is about $10,000 to $20,000 per month,” the study’s authors wrote in their study.
The costs of Viagra, Viagra’s active ingredient, have skyrocketed for men in the United States, with a total of $1.2 billion in sales for Viagra alone in 2020.
The drug’s patents expired in 2011, when Eli Lilly filed a generic version of Viagra and Lilly’s patent expired.
Since then, Eli Lilly has been getting a bunch of other drugs that are now available to treat erectile dysfunction, like sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra).
“They’ve become a big seller,” said Shabsigh.
He said, “We have a very large market for these drugs. We’re seeing a significant market for Viagra, Viagra’s active ingredient, Cialis.”
This is the first of many reasons men in the United States have taken Viagra or its generic equivalents to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra is also one of the most popular medications on the market, with over 5.5 million prescriptions written by men every month.
Viagra and Cialis are similar in many ways, but they have one key difference: they both work in the same way, so if you take them in the wrong way, you’re going to be taking them in the wrong way.
